Exploring Turkey's Hidden Gem: A 2020 Journey Through Cappadocia

As the leaves began to turn golden and red, signaling the end of October, I embarked on a week-long journey that would take me to the breathtaking country of Turkey. The weather was perfect, with clear blue skies and a crisp autumn air that made for ideal travel conditions.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to Cappadocia, which we reached by bus. This unique and otherworldly landscape is home to a variety of interesting sights and activities, but perhaps none were as memorable as the hot air balloon ride. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was incredibly easy to participate in, as we were dropped off at the launch site and picked up in the field where we landed. The timing of the ride was also perfect, as we took off before dawn when the only light was from the burners of the balloons. As we soared higher and higher, the sun began to rise, casting an ethereal glow over the landscape below.

Another must-see spot in Cappadocia is Pigeon Valley, which offers a panoramic view and an interesting story about the traditional practice of keeping pigeons. The underground city was also a favorite of mine, as it provides a tangible connection to the lives of ancient people. You will really feel how it is to be cramped in claustrophobic caves but safe from the intruders hunting you outside. The chapels and living rooms of the Goreme Open Air Museum were another favorite spot of mine. Here, I had the opportunity to climb narrow stairs (you can fancy yourself a monk traversing as you go through some form of the Liturgy of the Hours) and explore these beautifully painted and decorated spaces, giving me a glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of the past.

Of course, no visit to Cappadocia would be complete without taking a look at the local arts and crafts. I found the carpet and pottery portions of the trip particularly interesting. It was fascinating to learn about the government support for the people and businesses in the region, which has helped to ensure that the traditional art forms are not only preserved but also thrive. Thanks to certifications for artisanship, the value of plates or carpets is increased, and it made me want that for my own country as well. All in all, Cappadocia is a destination not to be missed.
